Reasonable courthouse restraint

We strongly support the right of Iowans to possess firearms for self-protection and sporting purposes but a ban on anybody but on-duty law enforcement officers from carrying firearms into courthouses makes sense.

Decently, Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady officially banned firearms from Iowa courthouses and other areas controlled by the judicial branch.

This appears to override a gun-rights bill signed by Gov. Terry Branstad earlier this year that allows Iowans to sue counties or cities that try to establish gun-free zones.

Tight security in the building in which criminal prosecutions and potentially emotional civil litigations take place should need no explanation.

Armed law enforcement officers are present at the courthouses when court is in session. For non-law enforcement people to carry weapons to “support the good guys” could end up compounding and confusing a tragic situation.
