Wolverines Win Homecoming Game
PAULLINA - South O’Brien hosted MMCRU for its 2017 Homecoming game Saturday. The game had to be moved from Friday night to Saturday night due to the weather conditions. This proved to be a great decision, as the sun was shining and the field had firmed up a bit.
The Wolverines were forced to punt on the first drive of the night but stopped the Royals on their first drive. After Carson Louscher returned the punt 10 yards the Wolverine offense went to work. After a 9 play drive Clay Leng scored on a 4 yard run. Drew Faust kicked the extra point and the Wolverines led 7-0 with 5:13 to go in the first quarter.
The Wolverines forced the Royals to punt again and Clay Leng scored three plays later on a 42 yard run. Drew Faust kicked the extra point again and the Wolverines led 14-0 with 2 minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Wolverines again forced the Royals to punt and with 48.4 seconds to go in the first quarter Clay Leng ran a 48 yard run and Drew Faust again kicked the extra point. This put the Wolverines up 21-0. The score would remain the same throughout the second quarter as the Wolverines came close to scoring right before halftime.
The second half started well for the Royals as they put together a drive of their own consisting of mostly pass plays. They scored with 5:39 to go in the 3rd quarter and made the 2 point conversion making the score 21-8.
The Wolverines got rolling again in the fourth quarter. Drew Faust scored on a 20 yard run with 11:52 to go. The two point conversion attempt came up short. The Wolverines then put together another short drive after Alec Wheeler intercepted a pass. Carson Louscher finished the drive off with a 28 yard run around end and Drew Faust kicked the extra point through the uprights. This put the Wolverines up 34-8 with 8:50 to go.
The final score came with 5:15 to go in the game as Tristan Wilson took a pitch 68 yards down the sideline. Micah Davis attempted the extra point kick but hit the right upright. The final score showed the Wolverines with a 40-8 victory.
Defensively, the Wolverines played like a team as the tackles were split evenly among a lot of the players. The Royals were only allowed 9 yards rushing on 27 carries for the game. Noah Fuhrman and Luke Jenness each had a sack and 2 tackles for loss. Darien Keith and Dayton Smith also recorded tackles for loss.
Offensively, the line really improved this week. They did a great job of working together which helped the Wolverines garner 381 yards rushing on 61 carries. Clay Leng led the way with 24 carries for 155 yards and 3 touchdowns. Drew Faust had 10 carries for 65 yards and 1 touchdown and Carson Louscher had 6 carries for 59 yards and a touchdown.
This week, South O’Brien travels to Armstrong to take on North Union. This will be a great opportunity for the Wolverines to pick up the second win of the season.
