Raptors place 7 at Doug Wood Invite
MANSON - The Ridge View Raptors traveled to Manson for the first tournament of the season on Saturday. Raptors’ Coach Caleb Christensen commented, “The Doug Wood invite is always a good start for us on the season. We see a lot of good competition, including some schools that we will not see the rest of the season. Its always good to start off with a tough tournament like this. When we can place six out of eight wrestlers in a tournament like this, it feels like a pretty good day.
We saw some good things. A lot of our guys are starting to put practice to performance on the mat. We still have a long way to go, but another good week of competition coming up should help us to see and refine some of the things we are doing.
A lot of our young wrestlers had pretty good days. Freshman Damein Garcia went 2-2 on the da, winning two hard - fought matches. It was good to see Damien battle hard, and put some of his technique together. Freshman Gary Baughn also had a great day, making it to the consolation finals. Gary is really wrestling well in his first high school season - he wrestles very tough and physical.
Sophomores Chance Hansen, Tate Phillips and Dylan Wood all wrestled very hard as well. This group of sophs really wants to improve, they work hard everyday in the wrestling room, and its starting to show on the mat.
Senior Lance Else took second, wrestling a tough finals match against 8th - ranked Brody Goodman of South Central Calhoun. Lance is really starting to turn the corner. He is a rock in our lineup, as he has been since his freshman year. He’s really starting to take on a leadership role in the wrestling room.
All in all it was a good day for us. Again, seeing great competition like that is good for us and will help in the long run.”
