Braves shut out ELC

The #15 (Class 3A) Cherokee Braves hosted Estherville - LIncoln Central in the first round of district softball play on Tuesday evening, and the Braves scored a 7-0 victory.

The Braves scored in the bottom of the second inning when Kassidy PIngel hit for a single. Sarah Kach then walked, and JeMae Nichols singled, scoring Pingel, and Lindsay Williams singled to score Kach. Payton Slaughter then singled to drive home Nichols and Grace Anderson, who was courtesy running for WIlliams.

In the fifth inning, LIndsay Williams drew a leadoff walk and then Payton Slaughter doubled.  Anderson, who was running again for Williams, scored on a wild pitch that moved Slaughter to third. Kassidy Pingel walked with two outs and Slaughter scored. Sarah Kach then walked, and a routine fly ball by Apryl Mesler was dropped, allowing Pingel to score from second base. 

Lindsay Williams allowed just for hits by the Midgets and struck out 10 batters.

Cherokee Coach Jenn Nixon commented, “We got ourselves into a couple of tough spots in the game tonight, but our defense overcame. They finished the game strong and together.  That is what we coaches have been telling the girls all season - Stay positive and work together during the tough times.’ We are proud of our kids and still have more that we want to accomplish as a team.”  

The Braves will travel to Spirit Lake on tonight to take on Spirit Lake at 5:30 p.m.
