The Sanford Museum has named their Artist of the Month. She is Sara Burrier from Des Moines, Iowa. Her medium of choice is watercolors accented with a touch of the treasures of life. She will have her art displayed at the Sanford during the month of April.

Each piece Burrier’s displays are a peace of her heart and hope. Life is fulfilling, but challenging, adventurous yet pain, beautiful yet deceiving. She aspires to bring God’s creations of colors, nature, imagination, dreams and magic to a stand still —a captured moment allowing us that life’s true harmony lies within in ourselves and the Eden among us. The way Sara knows how to express this is through the most intimate creation, the face and body of us.

Her process is simple, working from forgotten or classic vintage photographs and imagination she draws a face or pose that appeals to her. She rarely transfers final drawings to her watercolor paper, yet instead has a concept and then allows her intuition to tell her the rest.

When Sara paints in watercolor she has the freedom to create textures and color quickly while keeping her detailed drawings focused and intact. She is delighted to explore the medium’s behavior by combining salt, alcohol, splatter, drip and glazing techniques on paper. Spending hours glazing her subjects she refines them and their story while keeping the environment moving and dreamlike.

“In the end, almost daily stress and scurry, I long for my viewers to find a peaceful, light filled moment,” stated Sara.
