Library News

Iíve got two BIG things to talk about today. So buckle up.

The first is what happened yesterday. Yesterday, we were bombarded by several hundred fifth graders, all getting a tour and library cards. This is the third year we are working with the fifth grade team at Cherokee Middle School to help get cards in the hands of kids. Days like yesterday are truly my favorite days of work.

Basically, we have all of the fifth graders take home one of our sign up sheets. Parents fill them out. They come back to us. We give them cards. Bada-bing, bada-boom. Done. We give them a tour of the library, showing them all of the cool back office stuff that we have. Then, several times a year, they come back to check out more books and see more cool stuff.

Thanks to this program, we have seen a marked increase in studentís end of year reading scores on their standardized tests. We also help foster a lifelong love of reading and we get new faces to come to the library.

I want to give a huge shout out to my staff and to Lisa Hare at the Middle School for getting all of this done in an organized and timely manner. You all rock!!

The second big thing: Carpet. We are getting new carpet in the Youth Department next Monday! I am so excited to show you all the new and improved Youth Department. That being said, we will have to close it up on Monday and into Tuesday. We may be open for Storytime, we may not. It really depends on how far we get.

Just a reminder, the library as a whole will still be open, but the Youth Department will be closed. So, sorry Roblox kids, youíll have to play outside.

As for general housekeeping, we have a few programs coming up for adults. This Saturday, we are hosting Roll Initiative! Our monthly Dungeons and Dragons day for ages 16 and up. Ever been interested in learning how to play D&D? Well, weíve got you covered! We have several experienced players to help guide you through the campaign and get you comfortable in your role. Are you a veteran player looking for people to play with? You can come too! We have people of all ages and skill levels playing. Remember, Saturday, September 21st from 9-5. There will be a break at the four hour mark.

Crafterdark is back, baby! Join us next Thursday, September 26th for an evening of crafts, camaraderie, and, of course, wine. We are making decorative pumpkins made with book pages this time. So, stop by The Book Vine Thursday, September 26th from 6:30-8 for some fun!

Finally, we have some incredibly exciting news coming up regarding our open hours, so stay tuned for more information!
