5 Newcomers Join Braves
Cherokee’s varsity wrestling program returns eight lettermen to its roster this winter under the direction of veteran Braves’ Head Coach, Austin Todd.
A year ago, the Braves finished 10-19 in dual meet competition, and placed fifth in the seven-team Lakes Conference.
Returning veterans for the Braves are Simon Mummert, Nathan Harvey, Mike Burkhart, Ty Westphal, Damon Williams, Cael Wood, Carson Fuhrman and Dawson Ducommon.
Some new names on the roster also bring promise for depth on this year’s squad. Coach Todd reports that six promising prospects from outside the school district are working out on the team this season. Newcomers on the mat for Cherokee are Brenin Stoden, Brenin Fisch, Sean Cronin, Colin Pick, Braeden Kampoff and Nathan Harvey. All six show great potential and most definitely will have a positive impact on the Braves’ roster. “These guys bring excitement to our team. Our kids are more excited for the season because our odds of filling the line up greatly increases. With more numbers our team gets more depth, which proves better competition at each weight class.”
“I couldn’t be happier with the kids that are going our team. They want to be there and they want to compete,” added Todd.
“We have a large core group returning with sophomores, and juniors,” said Coach Todd. “And our senior group will be able to step up and lead this seam with high expectations,” he added.
Todd said the start of every season is an exciting time and “every weight class spot is wide open and will need to be earned.”
The Braves will be without state qualifier Hunter Shaw, lost to graduation, along with top performers Treighton Schubert, Dane Jurgensen, Bryce Lussier, Danen Pierce, Wyatt Kraft and Ethan Young.
“We had a large group of seniors lost to graduation which could leaves some gaps and opportunities in the lineup this year,” noted Todd.
Shaw qualified for the state tourney last year at 138 pounds in Class 2A and bowed out in first round action. Also for the Braves last year, Schubert was Cherokee’s lone Lakes Conference champion at 182 pounds and recorded his 100th career win earlier in the season.
Besides Schubert’s title effort, Cherokee featured one runner-up place winner in the league meet last year as 132 pounder Williams claimed second. Cherokee placed four wrestlers in third place - Burkhart at 120 pounds, Shaw at 138, Dane Jurgenson at 145 and Wood at 152 pounds. Furhman placed fourth at 160 as did teammate Bryce Lussier at 220 pounds. League fifth place finishers last year were Mummert at 106, Harvey at 113, Westphal at 126 and Ducommon at 195.
Qualifying for district tourney competition a year ago were Schubert, Furhman, Wood and Shaw.
According the head Cherokee coach, with LeMars gone from the Lakes Conference this year, the league is wide open. “A coach told me in my early years of coaching not to make a prediction, but if you ask me afterwards, I can tell you who performed well and what we need to work on,” he said.
