Carey Hetrick

For 25 years Carey Hetrick, owner of Carey’s Restaurant in downtown Cherokee, has been the host site of the Annual Community Thanksgiving Meal.

For the last 20 years members from the First Church of Christ have co-hosted the event at the restaurant providing food, supplies and manpower while Hetrick provided the place, potatoes, corn, pots, pans, dishes, and his manpower.

This year Hetrick decided he was getting up there in years and has passed the torch over to members of First Church of Christ. On behalf of the community, the church members express how grateful they are for this valuable service Hetrick provided to this community. For the last several years between 220–250 meals are served each year at this event.

This year the Annual Community Thanksgiving Meal will be served at First Church of Christ located at 772 N. 2nd Street in Cherokee, Iowa. The church is nestled between North 2nd and North 1st streets with the main entrance on the east side of North 2nd Street (HWY 59).

Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. There is plenty of parking and for those who have difficulty navigating stairs or are handicapped please feel free to park in the lower parking lot at the south end of the building.

The meal is FREE and a free will offering will be available to those who wish to contribute. Any amount left over after expenses will be donated to the Cherokee County Ministerial Association (CCMA).

For individuals who are homebound, meals can be delivered. Please call the First Church of Christ office by Wednesday, November 28th before 2 p.m. to get on the meal delivery list.

In order to promote a sense of community and fellowship we want to encourage as many people as possible to attend this meal. There will be plenty of seating and good company for all. This is particularly true if you are away from family and friends. There are also plenty of opportunities open to volunteer with helping with the meal, whether it is serving or providing food. If this is of interest to you contact the First Church of Christ office.

We are looking forward to once again serving the community with the Annual Community Thanksgiving meal at First Church of Christ in Cherokee. See you there!
