Young Braves 2nd at HWC
HULL - Cherokee's junior varsity volleyball squad finished second behind host Hull-
Western Christian in tourney play here Tuesday, going 2-1 on the night.
After defeating George-Little Rock 21-11 and 21-9, the Braves got by MOC-FV 2-1,
losing the first set 20-22 and then coming back to win 21-19 and finally, 15-10.
That set up the championship match with a taller host HWC. Cherokee came up short in
both sets by a score of 14-21.
"We seemed a bit off tonight," said Cherokee junior varsity coach Jodi Mongan. "But
we were still able to give Hull a game. We led at times and as a team never gave up.
Placing second on a slightly off night is definitely acceptable, but we will be back in the
gym working to get batter for our next upcoming tournaments," she added.
In the opening match with G-LR, Cherokee's serving was close to perfect at 37-38, led
by Parissa Frederiksen (10-10, 3 aces), while Kylie Christensen and Jaylee Happe were
6-6 with three and two aces, respectively.
Cherokee logged 14 kills on 34 attempts with Happe and Christensen each recording
four kills, while Keylee Gregg added three. Cheyenne Weiland garnered a dig stat in the
match and Frederiksen had 13 of 14 assists with Paris Mendez adding the other.
In the match with MOC-FV, Cherokee's serving was solid (52-57) with Frederiksen
leading the way (13-14, 2 aces), while teammates Carly Fuhrman (10-12, 2 aces) and
Lauren Schubert (9-10) aided the cause.
There were five blocks in the match for the Braves, led by Mendez with two.In the title
match, Cherokee only managed four kills out of 34 attempts.
