•1st Place Judged Choice - Pollinator Pots. Donna Kohn.

What is your purpose?

My purpose it to create small pollinator plots/habitat to help with the declining number of bees and butterflies (pollinators) in our area.

Full description of your idea.

I would like to create small plots of flower/plant plantings in public spaces such as the greenspace on East Main Street as well as the areas that have been flooded and grown back to grasses in the Spring Lake/Wescott area. This project could be expanded to include other areas if there was community interest. To assist with the planting and care, I would like to partner with local ag chapters such as WHS FFA or Cherokee County 4-H to involve youth in the project which could in turn be used as service projects for both organizations. In addition, if we could partner with the school as science curriculum, we could even involve more youth in the project. Also, we could challenge the community to plant small plots of their own to beautify the community and support the habitat of pollinators.

What needs are you filling?

Pollinators are very important to agriculture and our food system. They help thousands of flowering plants reproduce and can also provide benefits on the farm. We live in an ag community and this would drive home the important role pollinators play in our area.

Who is your target audience and how will you reach them?

My target audience is the community/county to raise awareness of the importance of pollinators and at the same time beautify areas within our communities. Then I would narrow that focus to meet with the local organizations I mentioned to gauge their willingness to help with this project. Also, I would need to meet with community leaders to pitch the project and gain access to the planting areas mentioned and establish a plan of action. I could explain and gain enthusiasm for the project using our local paper, radio and social media.

1st Place Public Choice - Bowlin’ Rollin’ a Bowling Alley & Mini Arcade. Claire Cedar.

What is your purpose?

Some people love bowling, but in Cherokee we don’t have a bowling alley. We can spend time with family and friends and celebrate birthdays there.

Full description of your idea.

We could make it at Shopco, with a desk at the front of the entrance. Plus, a mini food place and arcade with some tables and seats by the alley, and some colorful lights with music. And TV’s for scores.

What needs are you filling?

Kids can learn a hobby they like with their family and hang out with some friends. Some people maybe want a bowling alley again for some fun!

Who is your target audience and how will you reach them?

I want families to have some fun. I’ll put it on Facebook and Twitter and then hopefully it will be a success!
