Royal softball takes quick 19-0 win over Cherokee
CHEROKEE - The MMCRU softball team traveled to face Cherokee on Tuesday and took a 19-0 win in four innings.
MMCRU got things started quick with 11 runs in the top of the first while holding the Braves off home in the bottom half of the innings. After a scoreless second and third the Royals put another eight across in the top of the fourth to end the game early.
The Royals had 11 hits in the game, eight singles, a double and a pair of home runs for 19 RBIs. Senior Taylor Harpenau had three hits, a singles, double and home run for four RBIs while senior Emily Dreckman hit three singles for three RBIs. Junior Isabelle Olson hit a pair of singles for three RBIs while senior Mya Holmes hit a single and drilled a home run for two RBIs.
Olson pitched all four innings for the Royals and allowed four hits while walking two and striking out two. The team had no errors in the field off 19 total chances.
The Braves had four hits while being walked twice and striking out twice. Sophomore sisters Maddy and Megan Courtright, sophomore Carly Fuhrman and freshman Addison James had a single each for the Braves.
Maddy Courtright stood in the circle for the Braves and allowed 13 hits, 19 runs, seven earned, while walking two, hitting one and striking out four. The team had nine errors in the field off 24 total chances.
“MMCRU was a very hard hitting and aggressive base-running team,” said Cherokee head softball coach Abby James. “Our inexperience showed in this game. We once again hit the ball right to them and were unable to make things happen on the base path. Lola Christensen had a good game at shortstop and is improving each night.”
MMCRU rises to 4-0 and was scheduled to host Harris-Lake Park on Wednesday. They will host 5-0 Akron-Westfield tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Cherokee is now 1-5 and was scheduled to face 5-2-1 Estherville on Wednesday. They will host 2-2 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Saturday at 10 a.m.
