It’s summer. Do you think Quimby Watermelon Days?
QUIMBY - The long-standing traditions of children’s parades, BINGO, carnival rides, cake walks, the church food stand, and, of course, the FREE watermelon, have been bringing generations to this otherwise quiet Iowa town.
Beginning Friday, June 24th, and continuing Saturday, June 25th, there are events for almost every member of the family to enjoy.
On Friday and Saturday, the Church Food Stand opens in the Quimby Community Center on Main Street. The traditional menu of hot dogs, chili dogs, and memorable taverns is something to look forward to. The variety of pies and bars offers a mouth-watering selection rivaling any dessert buffet bar. Volunteers from the Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Quimby Methodist Church, and Washta Methodist Church will be serving from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. both days.
The always-popular BINGO Stand is also open both evenings. The first number will be called at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and continue until 11 p.m. On Saturday, the stand will be open from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
The McDermott Family Shows will fire up the rides and open the midway at 5 p.m. on Friday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday, which is also Kids Day, with reduced ride prices from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Fire Department Beer Garden opens at 5 p.m. on Friday and will feature musician Ben Puttman from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The Beer Garden will be open Saturday as well, with “Slow Jam” playing from 8 p.m. to midnight.
At 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening, the Kids Parade will begin lining up at the city water shed. The theme is “My Favorite Food” which should offer many interesting costumes. The parade will begin promptly at 6 p.m.!
On Friday night , cash drawings sponsored by Central Bank will be held each hour beginning at 7 p.m., with the last drawing at 10 p.m. You must be present to win!
Saturday’s events begin early with a registration for the 5K Run/Walk starting at 7 a.m. The Run/Walk begins at 8 a.m. The Annual Watermelon Days Golf Tournament kicks off the the Quimby Golf Course at 8 a.m.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Melon Patch Market will be open at the City Park. Eighteen vendors will offer items ranging from honey and kettle corn, to multitudes of handmade craft and household items, as well as clothing.
“Bob’s Bargains” will be open on Main Street from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. You never know what you’ll find here and you could haul home a real treasure.
Other events on Saturday include a Kids Scavenger Hunt, a bean bag tournament, a Kids Craft Station, Special K’z Clown Show, and a “Hello Summer Watermelon” painting class. The Cake Walk starts at 1 p.m. at the Fire Department.
The FREE Watermelon Feed will start at 8 p.m. A raffle drawing for $100 Fareway and Hy-Vee Gift cards will be held at 10 p.m.
Topping off the weekend’s events at 10 p.m. will be a fireworks display sponsored by the Quimby Fire Department. This display has become a delightful tradition and worth waiting around for.
