Cherokee boys golf team stays busy

The Cherokee Braves golf team battled the elements in four recent outings, including a couple weather make-up meets.

Host Spencer won a Lakes Conference triangular at the Spencer Country Club after carding a 154, to runner-up Estherville-LC 184, and Cherokee 200.

Adam Pitts was low for the Braves with a 43, followed by Austin WInchell 48, Austin Mongan 51, and Devin Mongan 58. Also for Cherokee, Zac Anderson carded a 59, and Rick Weaver 62.

Spirit Lake won a Lakes Conference triangular at Hull with a 162, followed by Hull Western Christian 173, and Cherokee 193.

Jake Spindler was low for the Braves with 46, followed by Adam Pitts 48, Austin Winchell 48, and Austin Mongan 51. Also for the Braves, Devin Mongan shot 54, and Eric Wilkie 60.

In JV action at Hull for Cherokee, Luke Lamoureaux shot 51, Rick Weaver 60, Andrew Zarr 62, Mason Hatch 63, Matt Woodall 65, and Anthony Back 75.

In a Lakes Conference dual at Le Mars, the host Bulldogs carded 182 compared to the Braves 193.

Spindler and Austin Winchell tied for medalist honors with 42, and WInchell winning medalist in a two-hole playoff. Austin Mongan shot 47, Devin Mongan 62, and Weaver 73. Cherokee’s Adam Pitts would have been medalist but signed an incorrect scorecard.

“Given the conditions, I was proud of the way our boys held it together,” said Cherokee coach James DeVos. “Both Jake Spindler and Austin Winchell tied for medalist but Austin edged out Jake in a 2-hole playoff. It was a good experience for both of them. “Unfortunately, Adam Pitts would have taken home medalist honors outright but signed an incorrect scorecard. He learned the hard way that it’s very important to check the scorecard that your opponent is keeping for you. Our younger players also got their first taste of meet competition in NW Iowa’s nasty spring conditions. This will definitely help them compete in future meets.”

In JV action for Cherokee, Lamoureaux shot 49, Wilkie 51, Zarr 61, Hatch 64, abd aaron Boisen 65.

At the cold and windy Storm Lake Invitational at Lake Creek Country Club, Pitts was low for Cherokee with 83, followed by Spindler 88, Winchell 97, Devin Mongan 110, Austin Mongan 112, and Eric Wilkie 113.

“The Storm Lake Invitational always brings a competitive field and last Saturday provided no exception,” noted Cherokee coach James DeVos. “Reigning 2A State Champs Carroll-Kuemper again played a dominant tournament enroute to their victory.

“The Braves struggled a bit in the windy conditions but held their own on this challenging 18 hole course. Adam Pitts shot an 83 to lead the team and Jake Spindler carded an 88. For our younger guys, this was their first experience at Lake Creek and they will definitely feel more confident next time we play there.”

Defending 2A state champion Carroll Kuemper won the team title with a 310, followed by Spencer 326, Storm Lake 346, carroll 349, Spirit Lake 350, Algona 352, Humboldt 356, Alta-Aurelia 357, Le Mars 369, Cherokee 378, and Denison-Schleswig 393.

Low for A-A was Jaden Holton 82, followed by Christian Weiland 89, Colton Ballantyne 89, Gabe Walsh 97, Doug Bonneson 109, Chris Bengtson 112.
