Braves win two before loss to Blackhawks

The Cherokee baseball team took a pair of victories, 12-2 at Western Christian on Wednesday and 4-3 over Storm Lake at home on Thursday, but lost 5-3 at home to Hinton on Friday evening.

At Western Christian on Wednesday, both teams scored a run in the first inning before the Wolfpack added a second in the fourth to lead 2-1. The Braves responded with three runs in the fifth, and four in each the sixth and seventh innings to take the 12-2 victory.

Cherokee had six this, four singles and two doubles, with eight RBIs. They were walked five times, hit by two pitches and struck out six times. Junior Henry Lugar scored two runs and had three hits, a single and two doubles, with three RBIs. Senior Alex Kohn scored a run and hit a single with two RBIs while senior Logan Thorson scored twice and hit two singles. Junior Logan Stowater and sophomore Cameron Kohn each scored two runs and had an RBI while senior Kael Miller scored a run and had an RBI.

Lugar, Alex Kohn, Lovell and freshman Mallon Malausky each stole a base in the game. Miller pitched all seven innings and allowed four hits, two runs, walked five and struck out five.

In the win over Storm Lake, the Tornadoes scored a run in the second and top of the fourth before the Braves put up three in the bottom of the fourth, helped with a two-run homer from senior Drew Spooner. Storm Lake tied the game up with another run in the top of the fifth, but the Braves added another run in the sixth for the 4-3 win.

Cherokee had six hits, two singles, three doubles and a home run, with four RBIs. They were walked once and struck out seven times. Spooner hit the home run and had two RBIs while Alex Kohn scored two runs, hit a single and a double, and had an RBI. Lugar scored a run and hit a double, Kruse hit a double and had an RBI and Thorson hit a single.

Lovell and Malausky each stole a base in the game. Kruse pitched most of the game as he allowed four hits, three runs, walked three, hit two batters and struck out eight in just over six innings. Alex Kohn came in to pitch late in the game and allowed one hit and struck out one.

Against Hinton on Friday, the Blackhawks scored three runs in the top of the first while the Braves found two in the bottom half of the inning. Hinton scored another run in the third while the Braves added one in the fifth, and Hinton scored a final run in the sixth for the 5-3 final.

Cherokee had four hits, three singles and a double. They were walked five times, hit by two pitches and struck out 12 times. Lugar hit a single and a triple while Miller scored a run and hit a single. Alex Kohn and Kruse scored a run each, and Stowater hit a single.

Alex Kohn stole three bases while Lugar, Stoatwer, Miller and Lovell took one each. Alex Kohn pitched five innings and allowed one hit, four runs, one earned, walked four and struck out six. Sophomore Noah Rapp threw for two innings and allowed one run, walked five and struck out one.

Cherokee is now 9-13 and was scheduled to finish out the regular season at Woodbury Central on Tuesday. They will host the first round of the postseason against 1-16 Western Christian on Saturday at 7 p.m.
