DIANE T. SLATER, 81, of Carroll, Iowa, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Saturday morning, April 13, 2024, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Pastor Mike Agnew will officiate. The burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Cherokee. Visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Services will be livestreamed through the assistance of Fuller Digital Solutions. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Diane’s honor for the Cherokee Golf Course Clubhouse project; donations can be directed to the family. Diane was born on May 18, 1942 to George Tyler and Leonora McKillop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She graduated from Canistota High School in 1960. She went on to Nettleton College of Business, graduating in 1962. During the summers, she enjoyed working with her sister, Mary, at the popular park café at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Lee Slater on December 26, 1965, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Diane began working as a bank teller in Sioux Falls before becoming a stay-at-home mom to raise their 3 children. In 1977, she became a licensed insurance agent selling personal lines of insurance, working side by side with her husband in his business until her retirement on July 24, 1996. After recovering from her brain aneurysm in 1996, she volunteered for Cherokee Hospice, local Election Polls, and St. Paul’s Methodist Women. Diane was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was also past president of Cherokee Braves Booster Club and Professional Business Women’s Club of Cherokee. She served as a den mother for her boys’ local Boy Scout troop. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren, playing and watching golf, and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was an amazing cook, always spoiling her family with homemade meals and baked goods. Some of her favorite times were traveling to support her boys Rodd and Ken while they were playing football for Northwestern and following Ann on the golf course at Kansas State. Diane and Ken supported their three children in all their ventures and were faithful attendees at the annual Sioux Valley Golf Tournament hosted by the Cherokee Country Club. Diane was a fabulous card player of Bridge and Pitch. During her downtime, you would often find her playing solitaire or teaching her grandkids how to play cards. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth Lee Slater in 2022, sister Julie (Bob) Gregg, brother-in-law Richard Carr, and mother-in-law and father-in-law Irene and Merle Slater. Diane will lovingly be remembered by her three children, Rodd Tyler Slater and his wife Chandee of McCook Lake, South Dakota, Kenneth Jay Slater of Sioux City, Iowa, and Ann Kay Slechta and her husband David Slechta of Carroll, Iowa; five grandchildren, Cash and Atticus Slater, Rylee Ann, Ellie Bailey, and Drew McKillop Slechta; sister Mary Carr of Phoenix, Arizona, twin brother Douglas (Gloria) Tyler of Georgetown, Texas, and sister Kay (Jim) Blankenfeld of Irene, South Dakota; also many nieces and nephews.
