Donna J. Hahn

Donna J. Hahn, 92, of Cherokee, Iowa, peacefully entered into eternal rest  and went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, Iowa.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.  at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee, Iowa.  Pastor David Hall will officiate.  Burial will be in the Good Hope Cemetery at rural Cherokee, Iowa.  Visitation was  held on Monday, December 19, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with family present from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in Donna’s name for a future memorial project.

Donna was born on December 21, 1929 to Victor and Gala Larson.  She attended Peterson Schools in town for grades 1-4 and Country School for grades 5-8.  She walked with the neighbor kids.  While in high school, she was active in musical singing groups, played the saxophone in the band, participated in speech and acted in many high school plays.  She liked to watch the sporting events at school but did not participate. She participated in 4-H, showing at the Spencer Fair for many years, winning lots of ribbons.  Donna graduated from Peterson High School in 1947. She received a scholarship and attended college in Cedar Falls, graduating with an elementary teaching certificate.  Donna worked as a teacher in Lohrville and Cherokee and then was a substitute for many years

Donna was united in marriage to Gerald Hahn on June 7, 1953 at the First Congregational Church in Peterson, Iowa.  They made their home on a farm in Silver Township, together they had three children, Vance, Darla, and Tasha.  Donna worked hard on the farm with Gerald, helping with all of the outside work and taking care of the children.  She later worked at Judy’s Hallmark in Cherokee from 1988 until 2000.

She was baptized in December 1962.  She was a member of the Congregational Church at Peterson, Iowa, Mt. Olive Baptist Church at rural Cherokee, and  was most currently a member of the First Church of Christ in Cherokee.  Donna held many offices in different women’s groups at church.  She sang in the choir and assisted with the activities involving the children. Donna was also a member of the Cherokee Villa Auxiliary for many years.

Donna enjoyed watching all sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, playing cards, reading, and baking. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald in 2009, brother Richard Larson, sisters-in-law Florence (Clifford) Bruce, Lucille (John) Cox, and Charlene (Don) Peterson.

Donna is survived by her children, Vance (Nan) Hahn of West Des Moines, Iowa, Darla (Joe) Immele of Cherokee, Iowa, and Tasha (Patrick) Hill of Sutherland, Iowa; five grandchildren, Alex (Alexis) Hahn, Christopher Hahn, Jessica Immele and her special friend, Bill, Cassy Immele, and Tirzah Hill; two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Macey Hahn; also several nieces and nephews.
