Mary S. Murphy, age 90 of Cherokee, IA, passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. Father Dan Rupp will officiate. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation with family present will be held 1:00-3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Cherokee, IA. There will be a 3:00 p.m. prayer service followed by a rosary, Sunday following visitation at the church. Following visitation, there will be a celebration of life starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Brightside Lounge in Cherokee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial be made in Mary’s name to be used for projects that were important to her. Mary Stella (Goebel) Murphy, daughter of John and Martha (Bernard) Goebel was born on May 5, 1934, in Granville, IA. She graduated from Spalding High School in Granville, IA and worked several jobs in Sioux City, IA.
On August 20, 1957, Mary was united in marriage to Tom Murphy in Granville, IA. Together they had seven children, Julie, Daniel, Thomas, Michelle, Colleen, Tim and Sue Ann. They lived in multiple cities including Sioux City, Sioux Falls, SD, Harrisburg, SD and eventually settled in Cherokee, IA in 1976. She was a homemaker for many years and then went to work for Hy-Vee Distribution Center until she retired in 2006.
Mary enjoyed quilting, cards, puzzles, golfing, and crocheting. Most of all, she enjoyed the time spent with her family and friends. She volunteered for Hospice for over 20 years. She was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
On November 5, 2024, Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at Heartland Care Center in Marcus, IA. She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, parents, John and Martha Goebel, siblings, Magnus (Leona) Goebel, Odilo Goebel, Linus (Mildred) Goebel, Joan (Ray) Loutsch, Arlene (Larry) McDermott, Vivian (Pete) Homan, and Ivan Goebel; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Goebel; In-laws, John Murphy, Francis Murphy, Edward Murphy, Rose Mary Van Wyhe, Maureen Soules, Eileen Murphy, and Sylvester Murphy.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Julie (Collin) Venenga of Sioux Falls, SD, Daniel (Dee) Murphy of Cherokee, IA, Thomas (Bonni Wessing) Murphy of Blue Springs, MO, Michelle (Paul) Paltz of Cherokee, IA, Colleen (Pete) Lehmann of Los Altos, CA, Tim (Amy Dongweck) Murphy of Cherokee, IA, Sue Ann (Heath Hagberg) Johnson of Cherokee, IA; grandchildren, Amber and Aaron Hone and children, Jake and Lauren all of Sioux Falls, SD, Ross (Meg) Duerksen and children, Avery and Merrick of Chicago, IL, Hilary Duerksen of Chicago, IL, Keven Paltz of Perry, IA Kayla (Cody) McDonald of Sanborn, IA, Meredith (Matt) Aguirre and children Gabe and Emersyn, of Cherokee, IA, Levi (Emma) Murphy of Nevada, IA, Kaysie Johnson of Cherokee, IA; siblings, Gerald Goebel of Granville, IA; In-laws, Leo Murphy of AZ, Cheryl (Jack) Bartz of IL, Teresa Jeffrey of NE, and Mary Fran Redman of NE; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
