Royal baseball drops two to end regular season

The MMCRU baseball team lost a pair of close games this past week, first 3-2 at Harris-Lake Park on Wednesday before a 4-3 home loss to Alta-Aurelia on Monday.

Against HLP on Wednesday,  The Royals scored a run in the first before the Wolves tied it up with a  run in the fourth. MMCRU took the lead back with another run in the top of the fifth, but HLP scored two in the bottom of the fifth for the 3-2 final.

MMCRU hit eight singles for two RBIs, were walked twice and struck out three times. Juniors Mason Grage and Lucas Braun each hit a single for an RBI while senior Mitchell Schnepf scored a run and hit two singles. Sophomore Gage Johnson scored a run and hit a single, and sophomores Parker Glassmaker and Michael Schmillen, and junior Michael Peterson each hit a single.

Johnson, Braun, Schmillen, junior Xander Tentinger, freshman Luke Kintigh and sophomore Brandon Dreckman each stole a base. Peterson pitched just over five innings and allowed four hits, three runs, one earned, walked two, hit two batters and struck out three. Tentinger threw just over two innings and hit one batter and struck one out.

On Monday against the Warriors, Alta-Aurelia scored a run in each the second and third innings before the Royals put up all three of their runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. The Warriors added two runs in the sixth to take the 4-3 win.

MMCRU had six hits, five singles and a double, with two RBIs. They were walked once, hit by a pitch and struck out nine times. Braun scored a run, hit two singles and had an RBI and Glassmaker scored a run, hit a double and had an RBI. Johnson scored a run and hit two singles and sophomore Eli Schlenger hit a single.

Johnson stole two bases in the game. Senior Cody Evans pitched for four innings and allowed two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out six. Sophomore Cayben Olson threw three innings and allowed two hits, two runs, walked two and struck out five.

MMCRU is now 12-8 and will start the postseason at home against 3-17 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Saturday at 7 p.m.
