Royals beat wolves, fall to Orabs

The MMCRU softball team split a pair of games last week, first a 5-3 win at Harris-Lake Park on Wednesday before a 14-2 home loss to Sheldon on Thursday.

In the Wednesday win, MMCRU scored a run in the first and four in the third to lead 5-0. HLP put up a run in the fifth and two in the sixth, but the Royals held on for the 5-3 victory.

MMCRU hit eight singles and had an RBI. They were walked twice, hit by a pitch and struck out four times. Senior Kaleigh Gravenish hit two singles and had an RBI while junior Breanna Staab scored two runs and hit a single. Freshman Tia Tentinger scored a run and hit two singles, and freshman Chloe Alesch, and juniors Cassie Weiler and Isabelle Richardson each hit a single.

Staab Weiler and freshman Brielle Lux each stole a base in the game. Gravenish pitched just over five innings and allowed one hit, three unearned runs, walked six, hit three batters and struck out nine. Richardson threw for just over an inning where she didn’t allow any hits, runs or walks.

In the loss the Sheldon on Thursday, the Orabs fired off for nine runs in the first inning before the Royals scored one run in the second. Sheldon put up five in the third as the Royals found one more in the bottom of the third, but lost 14-2.

MMCRU had three hits, two singles and a home run, with one RBI. They were walked once, hit by a pitch and struck out three times. Tentinger hit the home run while senior Mykin You hit a single for the RBI. Staab scored a run and Gravenish hit a single.

Staab and Gravenish each stole a base in the game. Gravenish pitched just over an inning and allowed five runs, one earned, walked three, hit one batter and struck out two. Richardson pitched an inning and allowed eight hits, nine runs, seven earned and walked two while Alesch threw for a bit and walked one and struck out one.

MMCRU is now 9-13 and will next host 4-15 Central Lyon on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the first round of the regional tournament.
