Sandy was born on October 19, 1943 to Ernie and Lilly Sump in Cherokee, IA. She attended Sutherland Schools, graduating in 1962. Starting at age 14, she worked at Fern’s Café in Sutherland.
She was married to Ronald Wetherell on August 3, 1962 in Sutherland. The couple resided in Peterson from 1962-1966, and then moved to Cleghorn, where they still currently resided. They had 2 children, Todd & Lisa. She was a stay at home mom and “Certified Parts Runner” for Ronnie’s Machine Shop in downtown Cleghorn. In 1975 they established Wetherell Mfg. and moved to it’s present location on the west edge of town. She was a staple at the shop, performing many duties over the years, but her favorite was the front desk receptionist, in which she was still working! She loved to get the mail every day, bringing it out, checking to see what all had came in for the day.
Sandy was a life-long member of the Cleghorn Presbyterian Church. She was one of the original Cleghorn 500 Club members, that still met regularly to play together. She enjoyed racing, of all kinds- whether it was the modifieds they had over the years, grandkids go-kart racing, or Nascar. She didn’t miss any of them! They took many trips with their family and other racing friends in “the bus” to Nascar races over the years. She loved Dale Earnhardt, (she still had Dale Earnhardt themed checks to this day) and after he passed she rooted for Kevin Harvick.
Ron and Sandy spent their summers at their condo in Okoboji. She enjoyed fishing at the end of the dock, watching the kids swim, trips to Arnold’s Park, and being surrounded by family when they came to visit. In the winters, they would travel to South Padre Island for several weeks. She loved the island. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family.
She still worked every day with her kids. She didn’t miss a beat, even after her strokes. She soon found her way back out to that front desk. Sandy also enjoyed attending the grandkids and great-grandkids sporting events, the many family birthday celebrations at Monterrey (in which she thoroughly enjoyed wearing the Sombrero) and tending to her flower garden (which could only consist of white/red geraniums).
She will be missed dearly by her loving husband of 60 years, Ronnie; Son -Todd (Pam) Wetherell of Cleghorn; Daughter - Lisa (Boyd)White of Cherokee; Mother-in-Law Toppy Wetherell of Peterson, Iowa; Sister, Sharon Wadsley of Spencer, Iowa; Brother-in-Law Mick (Alice)Wetherell of Cleghorn; 5 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grand Children.
