Steven C. Monteith, 76, of Arlington, SD passed away Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Prince of Peace Hospice, Sioux Falls, SD. Steve and Gail Monteith are former residents of Cherokee and Larrabee, Iowa.
Memorial Services were held at 11:00am Monday, September 30, 2024 at Lake Norden Covenant Church, Lake Norden, SD. Burial was held at 3:00pm Monday, September 30, 2024 at Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
On May 19, 1948, at the old Barton Hospital in Watertown, SD, Steven Carl Monteith made his entrance into the world 10 minutes after his twin brother, Alan was born, much to the delight and surprise of his parents.
Growing up, he and his best friend spent hours journeying throughout the city of Brookings, through flooded streets, creeks, anywhere a bicycle could go. As they got older, they helped out on the farms of their grandparents and uncles with bailing. Steve attended the Brookings Public school system, graduating in 1966.
On January 14, 1967, at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings SD, Steve married his high school sweetheart, Gail Knudson. They were blessed with 3 children.
Steve and Gail moved to Cherokee, Iowa where Steve was employed with the packing plant there until moving back to Brookings in 1978. He was employed with the City of Brookings until his retirement in 2004. He then worked for Tim’s Cutting Edge in Estelline, and later part time for the City of Arlington, mowing lawns until health reasons forced him to retire again.
Steve enjoyed the outdoors very much. He enjoyed fishing with his dad on Lake Poinsett. During the years his sons were in the Boy Scouts, Steve served as a Webelos leader and Scout Master. Steve was exceptionally proud of the Polar Bear Patch he earned on camping trips with the troupe. There were also canoeing trips to Canada with adult friends. But the BIG event of the year was the west river deer hunting trips taken with his mom, dad, siblings, and anyone who wanted to go, except his wife!
Steven loved the Lord Jesus Christ serving faithfully on the church board and for a term as Church Chairman with the Lake Norden Evangelical Covenant Church where he is a member.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2013, he maintained a positive outlook, always doing his exercises until he no longer could. He never complained. But he did sneak down to the grocery store with his Polaris to buy a package of cookies to go with his coffee. This was until his wife confiscated his keys and drivers license as it became unsafe for him to drive.
Rarely turning down an offer to eat out, Pizza Ranch became his preferred place to eat as long as they had ice cream so he could make his favorite root beer floats!
Steven was ushered into the presence of His Lord on Saturday, September 21, 2024. He died of injuries he sustained from a fall at his home on August 29, 2024.
Survivors include his wife, Gail, of Arlington SD; sons, Tracy and Tony; daughter Tresa (Jodi); granddaughter, Tyjah (Curtis) Saavedra all of Brookings SD; grandson, Austin, of Sioux Falls SD; and a great grandchild due in November; Twin brother, Alan (Cheri) of New Mexico; Sister, Rita (Richard) Trejo of Ventura, CA; and brother Dean (Pam) of Vermont.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Duane and Carol (Page) Monteith, grandparents, Carl and Dollie (Hart) Monteith; Leo and Miriam (Carr) Page.
Steven wishes people to not be sad at his passing. “Rejoice, because I’ve gone home to be with my Lord!”
