Tracy was born on October 20, 1942, in Riverside, CA to Lowell and Jean (Ware) Peterson, they returned to Cherokee and lived on the family farm in Afton Township.

Tracy graduated from Washington High School in Cherokee in 1962.  After graduation, he attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, Iowa, and received a degree in accounting.

In 1965, he was drafted into the Army and served for one year in Vietnam, being discharged in 1967.

He married his wife, Kathy on September 17, 1966, in Estherville, Iowa, and they returned to Cherokee, in 1968.

Tracy worked for Sears, First Federal and was also the Chamber of Commerce Director. He spent most of his career as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau, retiring after 34 years in 2012, he loved being out and checking on his clients, many who became friends.  He also enjoyed helping his dad farm in his spare time.  Just being out in the field on the tractor was what he liked most about farming.

Tracy enjoyed time spent at the lake house, fishing was one of his favorite past times and after he became a grandpa he spent much time teaching his grandchildren to fish.  One of their first birthday gifts they received from him was a fishing pole.  Time spent with his grandchildren, especially after retirement, held very special memories for him and for them.  He attended all of their school activities and was their #1 fan.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kathy; his son, Matthew and daughter, Jennifer (Mike*) Hart; his niece, Hallie Wells; his grandchildren, Katy (Lauren) Hart; Lane Peterson; Josie (Chase) Wiese; Sydney (Dillon) Temple; Ben Hart; Lydia Hart; Milana and Finley Wells and great-grandchildren, Waylon and Presley; his sister, Jill and brother-in-law Tom (Marsha) Hall.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Scott.
