Wolverine baseball loses three games

The South O’Brien baseball team dropped a trio of games this past week, first a 9-4 home loss to Sheldon on Thursday, a 5-3 road loss to Trinity Christian on Friday and a 13-6 home loss to West Sioux on Monday.

Against Sheldon, the Wolverines scored two runs in the first, but the Orabs responded with six runs in the second. South O’Brien scored one run in each the third and sixth, but Sheldon scored three runs in the sixth for the 9-4 final.

South O’Brien had four hits, three singles and a home run, with four RBIs. They were walked twice, hit by a pitch and struck out 10 times. Senior Mitchell Enger hit the home run and had two RBIs while senior Ben Woodall scored a run, hit a single and had an RBI. Sophomore Damian Villarreal scored twice and hit two singles while junior Ryan Fuller had an RBI.

Villarreal stole two bases in the game. Sophomore Alex Griebel pitched five innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs, six earned, walked six, hit one batter and struck out three. Sophomore Jaden Kreber threw for two innings and allowed two runs, walked four and struck out one.

In the loss to Trinity Christian on Friday, the Wolverines scored a run in the first, but the Tigers put up one run in the second and four in the third to lead 5-1. South O’Brien scored a run in each the fourth and fifth, but fell 5-3.

South O’Brien had eight hits, seven singles and a double, with two RBIs. They were walked three times and struck out eight times. Enter hit a single and a double for two RBIs while Villarreal scored a run and hit two singles. Sophomore Brady Riedemann scored a run and hit a single, sophomore Gabe Moermond hit two singles and Woodall scored a run.

Villarreal and Fuller stole three bases each while Woodall and Moermond each took one. Senior Trevor Fiddelke pitched for five innings and allowed two hits, four runs, one earned, walked four and struck out five. Fuller threw for an inning and allowed one hit and struck out one.

On Monday against West Sioux, the Wolverines scored a run in the first, but West Sioux put up four in the second. South O’Brien scored a run in the third and West Sioux scored seven in the fourth. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Falcons scored one run and the Wolverines put up two for the 13-6 final.

South O’Brien hit six singles and had four RBIs. They were walked eight times, hit by a pitch and struck out 12 times. Woodall scored three runs and hit a single while Villarreal scored a run, hit two singles and had an RBI. Fuller scored a run, hit a single and had an RBI, Kreber scored a run and hit a single and Moermond had two RBIs.

Moermond stole two bases in the game while Villarreal, Woodall and Fuller took one each. Woodall threw for three innings and allowed four hits, seven runs, two earned, hit four batters and struck out two. Fuller threw for three innings and allowed four hits, five runs, four earned, walked three, hit two and struck out five. Senior Willie Conley took the mound for an inning and allowed two hits, one run and struck out one.

South O’Brien is now 5-16 and was scheduled to face Gehlen Catholic on Wednesday. They will travel to take on 9-11 Harris-Lake Park to start the postseason on Saturday at 7 p.m.
