Wolverine softball beats Royals, Hawks

The South O’Brien softball team took a pair of home wins this past week, a 12-7 win over MMCRU on Wednesday and a 16-6 victory over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on Monday.

On Wednesday the Royals scored two runs in the second and the Wolverines fired off for six runs in the third. MMCUR added another run in the top of the fifth, South O’Brien scored six more in the bottom of the fifth, and the Royals put up three in the sixth as the Wolverines won 12-7.

MMCRU had 12 hits, 10 singles, a double and a home run, with 10 RBIs. They were walked four times, hit by a pitch and struck out seven times. Senior Jinger Nieuwenhuis hit the home run and had three RBIs while junior Abby Nelson scored two runs, hit two singles and had two RBIs. Sophomore Reese Farquhar scored a run, hit a single and had two RBIs, junior Ashlynn Gunnerson scored twice, hit a single and a double, and had an RBI, and Sophomore Tawni Wulf scored a run, hit two singles and had an RBI.

Wulf stole two bases while senior Marissa Ebel and sophomore Kelsee Warnke each took one. Senior Brooklyn Edwards pitched all seven innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs, two earned, walked three and struck out seven.

In the win over HMS, the Wolverines scored three runs in the top of the first while the Hawks put up two in the bottom of the first. South O’Brien added four in the third and one in the fourth before the Hawks scored another run in the fifth. The Wolverines fired off for eight runs in the top of the sixth and HMS put up three in the bottom of the sixth for the 16-6 final.

South O’Brien had seven this, five singles, a double and a home run, with nine RBIs. They were walked four times, hit by six pitches and struck out five times. Edwards hit a single, double and the home run for two RBIs while Ebel scored three runs, hit a single and had an RBI. Nelson scored twice, hit a single and had an RBI, Gunnerson scored a run and had two RBIs and Warnke scored three runs.

Ebel and Warnke stole two bases while Nelson and eighth grader Cassidy Horstmann each took one. Edwards pitched the whole game and allowed eight hits, six runs, four earned, walked six, hit one batter and struck out three.

South O’Brien is now 9-9 and will travel to take on 12-6 Trinity Christian on Friday at 6 p.m.
