Wolverines fall to Tigers, beat Falcons

The South O’Brien softball team split a pair of games this past week, first a 3-2 road loss to Trinity Christian on Friday before an 8-1 home win over West Sioux on Monday.

On Friday, the Tigers scored a run in the second before the Wolverines put up two in the third to lead. Trinity Christian put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the last second comeback 3-2 win.

South O’Brien hit two singles and had an RBI. They were walked once, hit by a pitch once and struck out five times. Sophomore Tawni Wulf scored a run and hit a single while junior Ashlynn Gunnerson had an RBI. Senior Brooklyn Edwards hit a single and sophomore Lindsey Einck scored a run.

Sophomores Kelsee Warnke and Avery Halvereson each stole a base in the game. Edwards pitched the whole game and allowed six hits, three runs, walked one, hit one batter and struck out one.

In the win over West Sioux, South O’Brien scored two runs in the first, one in the second, two in the fifth and three in the sixth before the Falcons scored their one run in the seventh for the 8-1 final.

South O’Brien had nine hits, seven singles, a double and a home run with six RBIs. They were walked five times and hit by a pitch. Senior Jinger Nieuwenhuis hit the home run and had two RBIs while Edwards hit a single and a double with three RBIs. Junior Abby Nelson scored a run, hit two singles and had an RBI, Wulf scored a run and had two singles, and Einck and sophomore Reese Farquhar each scored a run and hit a single.

Warnke, Halverson and senior Marissa Ebel each stole a base in the game. Edwards pitched all seven innings and allowed five hits, one run, walked four, hit one batter and struck out two.

South O’Brien is now 10-10 and was scheduled to face Gehlen Catholic on Wednesday. They will host 18-8 Woodbury Central on Friday at 7 p.m. before they start the postseason at home against 4-15 Harris-Lake Park on Monday at 7 p.m.
