Ronald J. Peterson, 76, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Saturday, April 24, 2021 at Careage Hills in Cherokee, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 30th, at 10:30 a.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Pastor Mark Leeds will officiate. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Alta, Iowa with military rites by L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of the V.F.W. and the Cherokee American Legion. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 29th from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa. Ron was born on March 15, 1945 at Alta, Iowa to Frang G. & Violet (Schmidt) Peterson. He graduated from Alta High School in 1963 and then attended Mechanics Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska. Ron was married to Shirley Kay Heschke on December 22, 1965 at Alta, Iowa. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, being stationed at Radcliff, Kentucky (1965-66) and at Camp Kaiser, Korea in 1967, being honorably discharged in August of 1971.
Over the years Ron worked as an auto mechanic for Dunns Chevrolet until it became Browns Chevrolet, then to Heartland Car Care until they closed and then finished his career at Hesse’s until retirement in 2005. He was an active member of the Cherokee Railroad Depot Renovation Committee and the model railroad at the Cherokee Depot. He was a Ridgerunner for years and a member of the Prairie Lakes Railroad Division. He was a member of the National Model Railroad Association He was a member of the Alta Presbyterian Church.
Ron enjoyed woodworking, model railroads, trains in general, fishing, hunting, and building background sets for the community theater. He loved all of his family so very much, his wife, kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. The great-grandchildren could put a mile wide smile on his face. Ron loved spending time with all of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Galen Karl Peterson in 1943, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, and brother-in-law George Smith.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of Cherokee, Iowa; three children: Lauri (Jeff “Ed”) Garvin of Cherokee, Iowa; Angela Lynn (Tracy) Stevenson of Quimby, Iowa; Joseph Robert (Jessie) Peterson of Meriden, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Jesica Garvin (Kyle), Tenise Stevenson (Brant) and Trent Stevenson (Lane), Logan and Whitney Peterson and 2 great grandchildren, Tatem Stevenson and Weston Zugel; his siblings: Laurine Smith of White Salmon, Washington and Leon (Barb) Peterson of Holstein, Iowa, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
