Memorial Day Services

Friday, April 30, 2021

The Cherokee VFW will host a 2021 Memorial Day Service at Oak Hill Cemetery with the program starting at 11 a.m. Monday, May 31.

After announcing a month ago that there would be no service due to a dwindling number of veterans on hand to work the special day, the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce has stepped up with volunteers to help the veterans host the proud Cherokee tradition.

This year’s event will be a scaled down version featuring 125 flags instead of the normal 250 in years past. The flags will be a lighted display once again. The somber playing of Taps will be electronic with the passing of legendary veteran Bob Conley who played Taps for 70 years in and around Cherokee for military funerals, special events, and Memorial Day Services.

To volunteer or with questions for the Memorial Day Service contact Tom Kohn at the Veterans Affairs Office at 225-6319 Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Tuesday-Thursday by appointment. Or call Steve Reinert at 229-0372, or Joel McCartan at the Chamber zt 225-6414.
