You truly have one of the best community newspapers in the state. As a lifelong Republican I frequently disagree with some of your positions. Yet your observations expressed in “Silencing the press” are valid and extremely important.
Simultaneously, Mr. Guebert correctly points out the idiocy of trying to draft a farm bill on the foundation of policy draft 10 decades ago. Then you run Corbin’s article comparing social and political policy of today with those of in Orwell’s “1984.”
All of these observations and concerns are legitimate. They need serious civil discussion. However, we collectively have overlooked the most important driver of all. We haven’t educated our young people about these civic, policy, and political issues for at least four decades, maybe even five. Why should we expect a thoughtful discussion on them now?
I believe we have plenty of money committed to education. We’ve simply assigned every behavioral and social dysfunction to our educational system. That takes much time and money. As a result, issues like those above have been relegated to the archives of what education was once about.
Keep up the good work and the presses running! Someone needs too.
