The Aurelia Star will be forced to cease publication Feb. 1 because of the loss of public notices from Cherokee County.
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors elected not to name the Aurelia Star an official publication at its organizational meeting last week. The loss of revenue from public notices makes the newspaper insolvent on an operating basis.
Since we cannot afford to cover the losses that the Star will accrue without county public notices, we regret that we can no longer publish it as a free-standing publication. All the news in the Star will be published in the Cherokee Chronicle Times or the Storm Lake Times Pilot.
All Aurelia Star subscribers will be offered to use their subscription for their choice of the Chronicle Times or the Times Pilot. Please email the Chronicle Times or the Storm Lake Times Pilot at circ@stormlake.com and let us know which you would prefer. Each carries news and sports coverage of the Alta-Aurelia School District.
We are grateful to the subscribers who tried to keep the paper going after we assumed ownership a few years ago. Unfortunately, with insufficient revenue many local newspapers must close. Fortunately, both the Cherokee and Storm Lake newspapers will continue to cover Aurelia and its environs.
