Grand Meadow Larks win state fair trip

It’s off to the Iowa state fair for one Cherokee county 4-H girls’ demonstration team. The Grand Meadow Larks, represented by Beverly Irwin, 16, and auburn-haired Beverly Mahnke, also 16, were selected for that honor.

Thousands throng Pilot Rock plowing match

With Pilot Rock’s 43rd annual plowing march now near memorable history, officials and crowds that poured into the ground for two days alike were terming it the most successful match in years.

J. Anderson has Champ Reserve Calf

Jim Anderson, Cherokee, rural route, a veteran showman for his 20 years, displayed the grand champion baby beef at the 15th annual Cherokee county 4-H livestock and achievement show on the Pilot Rock Plowing Match grounds Thursday afternoon.

Nix pay hike for county workers

A proposal that all hourly-paid employees of Cherokee County be given 10-cent per hour cost-of-living wage increases was rejected today by the county Board of Supervisors.

Wolfs’ hogs win

The Wolf brothers of Cleghorn, Jay and Scott, are presenting more than their share of problems for other swine producers in the area. The problem is, simply, that nobody can seem to beat them — a point made all the more clear Tuesday when Scott Wolf won the individual grand champion swine as well as the grand champion in the pen-of-three while brother Jay was taking reserve honors in the individual class as well as first place in the heavyweight individual swine and the heavyweight pen at the Marcus Fair.

Mull new sites for city hall

A special city planning and zoning meeting has been scheduled Monday to ponder a request that three to five sites be considered for possible relocation of Cherokees city-hall complex, instead of one as recently proposed.

2000 Cherokee County Fair Queen Liz Ogren of Marcus was Second Runner-up in the 2000 Iowa State Fair Queen Contest pageant held last Saturday in Des Moines.

Area residents enjoy annual Maryhill Picnic

Area residents attend the 82nd annual Maryhill picnic Sunday, Aug. 13, at the church southwest of Cherokee. 1,200 chicken dinners with homemade desserts were served.

Cherokee youth spends summer in Alaska, hunting, fishing

For a young 16 year old, who has been hunting since he was eleven, a trip to Alaska was an adventure for a lifetime. Daniel Neimeier, Cherokee, began his adventure on the Memorial Day Weekend when he left for Anchorage, Alaska to spend the summer with his Uncle Scott Christian and his family.
