Eight schools benefited by school lunches

School children in Cherokee county benefited to the extent of $13,304.47 in federal funds used to help finance their noon lunches during the 1949-50 school year.

2nd Annual Field Day was big success

A heavy-set Cherokee sportsman well known throughout this area, one John Gilchrist, carted off two top prizes in the 29-man fly casting competition, Sunday afternoon at the second annual Sportmen’s field day here.

Schaller cuts Beekman Skein with 5-3 win

Schaller nosed out Storm Lake, 5-3, in an Iowa State league game here Sunday night. The Red Caps banged out nine hits off Jay Beekman who suffered his first loss of the season.

Fair livestock sold at auction

Eight blue-ribbon steers from the 1975 Cherokee County Fair were put up for sale Wednesday, with Aurelian Matt Miller’s and Cherokean Duke Escue’s entries bringing top dollar at $55.50 per hundredweight.

Invitational win to Cherokee

An improved Cherokee swim team finished atop the fourteam Cherokee invitational on Saturday by scoring 304 points. Storm Lake placed second in team standing with a 281, while Sheldon tallied 244 and Algona finished with 120.

Drought hits crops

The condition of Cherokee corn and soybean yield this fall is at the mercy of the weatherman. Forrest Kohrt, Cherokee County extension director, said today if crops do not receive soaking rainfall within the next two weeks, county farmers will be luck if they average 60 bushels of corn and acre and 25 bushels of soybeans per acre.

Local business moves to Main Street location

Karen Peterson and Patty Smith recently assumed ownership of Northwest Iowa Realty, now known as Northwest Realty. Realty will be moving to the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce building at 228 W. Main Street.

Fridley visits Cherokee

Bob Fridley, owner of the Fridley Theatres, was in Cherokee Thursday of last week, reviewing his options on improving the American Theatre.

Drought disaster assistance sought

The ISU Extension office, Cherokee, hosted an informal question and answer time at WITCC, Thursday night to discuss the drought situation with a large contingency of are farmers and State Senator MaryLou Freeman.
