Letter to the Editor: Honoring Jerry Menke

Posted

I am writing today to express my sincere condolences and to honor the life of Jerry Menke. Jerry and I met several years ago when the former Tyson facility closed in Cherokee. He was, without a doubt, a beacon of hope for Cherokee County. When I accepted the role of economic development director for Cherokee County, Jerry and I would see each other multiple times during the week. He was indispensable in my role. He understood the value of the plant and the potential it had for the future of the county. Jerry led countless tours and, in fact, he and I hosted prospects once on Thanksgiving morning. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind where Jerry’s heart was. He was committed to seeing the former Wilson Foods, Continental Deli, Tyson facility operating again. And doing his best for those employed at the plant and for the communities in which they lived. As an economic developer, friend, and resident of Cherokee County, I cannot thank Jerry enough for all he did to assist in filling the vacant processing plant. In addition to so many other things, he will be forever remembered for his vital role in doing so. Jerry, thank you for all you did for Cherokee County and may your soul rest in peace.
