Cherokee’s annual June flower show held Saturday was as the poet might say - “a thing of beauty.” Mrs. Popma won sweepstakes honors for having the most blue ribbons.
Lightning strikes barns at Mt. Olive Church site
A fire Saturday night destroyed a second structure at the Mount Olive church site in five months. Saturday night an old barn went up in flames when struck by lightning.
Garbage rates in area may rise
Four area towns may have to use tax money to pay for garbage collection after July 1 due to an increase of rates proposed by Kieth Walker, who currently does the garbage work in the towns.

Honors given at Cherokee Flower Show
Beauty in every aspect greeted viewers at the 46th annual flower show, “Gems of June,” presented by the Cherokee Federated Garden Club. Roses at their peak of perfection and other flowers prevalent in the month of June were artistically arranged, some in self-designed and molded containers.
Cherokee residents experience blow of recent storm
A number of Cherokee County residents experienced the wrath of a storm Tuesday afternoon, with one confirmed twister touching down. Numerous trees were uprooted or split. Several power lines were knocked to the ground.
Concert on the lawn attracts big crowd in Meriden
The town of Meriden came alive, Sunday night, when Grateful Heart, a gospel ground from Omaha, NE, performed in a concert on the lawn of Meriden Evangelical Free Church.
Eagles win in Metrodome
The MMC baseball team defeated Spirit Lake 12-2 in a game played in the Metrodome in Minneapolis on Sunday.
