Melvin Fritz

Melvin Carl Fritz, 88, of Marcus passed away Thursday, July 24, 2025, at his home. 

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 29, at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Burial was at Liberty Cemetery, Meriden. Military honors were conducted by F.I. Goodburn Post 517 American Legion of Marcus. Services were entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument-Earnest Johnson Chapel in Marcus.

Melvin was born Jan. 19, 1937, in Circle, Mont., the son of Alvin and Elsie (Volpp) Fritz. He was raised and educated in Circle, Mont. He entered the U.S. Navy on Feb. 20, 1956, until he was honorably discharged on Jan. 14, 1960.

On June 17, 1961, he married Janet Jacobson at Tacoma, Wash. The couple made their home in Tacoma, Wash., then moved Elmira, Ore. In 1979 they moved to Cherokee and finally settled in Marcus where he was a farm hand. In 1989 he worked at First Co-Op Association in Meriden.

Over the years Melvin raised sheep, chickens and turkeys. He enjoyed reading western books and watching westerns. He also enjoyed watching sports.

He is survived by his three daughters: Melanie Fritz of Albert City; Melinda Schwartz of Le Mars; and Mary (Ray) Conlin of Laurens; five grandchildren: Alex (Darci), Sarah, Andrew, Jaclynn and Kurtis; two great-grandkids, Carly and Katrina; special grandkids, Noah Prescott and Jocelyn Bloebaum; two adopted daughters, Cindy Kohn and Judy McCord; his siblings, Louise Holmes and Viola (George) Titsworth; sisters-in-law: Edna Fritz, Kae Fritz, Julie Tryon and Lana (Andreas) Kaupert; brother-in-law Arlen (Merian) Jacobson.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Janet; son-in-law Carl Schwartz; siblings: Mildred (James) Scott, Howard Fritz, Gladys (Albert) Sukut, Richard (Joy) Fritz, Art (Glenda) Fritz, Lyle Fritz, Ralph (Lillian Currah) Fritz, Winfred Fritz, Avron Fritz, Lucille (Bernard) Masson, Lawrence (Lillian) Fritz and Earl (Doline) Fritz; father and mother-in-law, Jalmer and Alfaria Jacobson; in-laws: John Holmes, Aldie (Myron) Ludwig and Dennis Tryon.
